About Autism

Today, 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with Autism, making it more common than Pediatric Cancer, Juvenile Diabetes, Leukemia, Muscular Dystrophy and Pediatric AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Scientists aren't certain what causes the disorder, but it's likely that both genetics and environment play a role.

Although Autism is statistically much more prevalent in children than all of the above mentioned sicknesses combined, adversely it represents the same disparity in financial support. Autism support represents far less in annual dollars from private funding and donations than each of the other charities listed above.

Autism is deemed a national health crisis by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. Scientists have not discovered a medical detection or cure for it.

Caring for someone diagnosed with Autism is not only physically and emotionally exhausting, but economically exhausting as well. The cost of caring for someone with Autism is very expensive. It is estimated to cost at least $17,000 more per year to care for a child with an autism spectrum disorder. For more severe cases it can cost over $21,000 to care for an individual.
